Traveling Tips

Traveling is a wonderful adventure: exploring new places or revisiting areas which are favorites. New Orleans offers a mega experience for all travelers. From the cultural vibes of the city to the unique architecture, street musicians, delicious and unique foods along with museums and entertainment venues, there is something for everyone. But the #1 item on your travel checklist should be “Caution”. Being cautious is one way to ensure a memorable experience. Whether traveling locally, nationally or internationally, safety you should always “pack” that cautious persona!  The travel and safety tips below serve as a “reminder/refresher” for traveling at any time.

  1. Consider exploring the city in groups. Create your own group or ask to join others as they are headed out on a day of adventures.
  2. Avoid darkly lit areas. Take the “Lighter” well-lit routes. Shortcuts are not always the safest.  Avoid taking “the fastest way” to arrive at your destination. Take the busy, well-traveled routes.
  3. Be cautious of strangers who may offer to assist you to your destination. General rule of thumb - Do not trust them!
  4. BE AWARE! Is someone being extra observant of you or those you are with? Check your surroundings as you go about the city.
  5. Phones should not be the focus. Your guard is down when focused on the phone. Use as a means of travel directions and brief conversations. Put away when not in use.
  6. Cash and card - Remember those tipping hints for the service workers encountered along a journey such as taxi drivers and luggage attendant. A general rule of thumb is to carry small bills for tipping. HINT: Cafe Du Monde only accepts cash!
  7. Purses are the keepers of the valuables or so some may think! Check your purse and its contents before traveling.  Some items to consider are
    1. Condense the contents to what you actually need.
    2. Choose a purse designed for travel with shoulder or cross-body straps and strong closures.  Keep your purse on you at all times.

This is an exciting time for our Society, but the safety of all is paramount. See you in July!
